Hormonal Intrauterine Device (IUD) (Mirena O Eloira

Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) that can provide long-term birth control (contraception).

The device is a T-shaped plastic structure that is inserted into the uterus, where it releases a type of progestin hormone. To prevent pregnancy, Mirena:

  • Increases the thickness of the mucus in the cervix to prevent sperm from reaching or fertilizing an egg.
  • Reduces the thickness of the membrane lining the uterus and partially inhibits ovulation.
  • The Mirena System prevents pregnancy for up to five years after insertion.

It is one of several hormonal IUDs approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
